How to Join Indian Air Force After 12th or Graduation? NDA, CDS, AFCAT & Agniveervayu Explained

✈️ How Can You Join the Indian Air Force?

Many students dream of joining the Indian Air Force (IAF), but they are often confused about which examination they should write after Class 12 or graduation.

The correct route depends mainly on your age, educational qualification and whether you want to become an Officer or join as an Agniveervayu.

This guide explains NDA, CDS, AFCAT and Agniveervayu in a simple way.

1️⃣ NDA – Best Route After Class 12 to Become an Officer

NDA stands for National Defence Academy. The examination is conducted by the UPSC.

Students who want to become an Indian Air Force Officer immediately after Class 12 should pay special attention to NDA.

✅ Basic Eligibility

  • Indian citizen as prescribed in the notification.
  • Male and female candidates can apply.
  • Candidate must be unmarried as prescribed.
  • Normally around 16½ to 19½ years at commencement of training.
  • For Air Force Wing, candidates should have the required 10+2 subjects including Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • Students appearing in Class 12 may also be eligible subject to notification conditions.

📝 Selection Process

NDA Written Exam → SSB/AFSB Selection → Medical Examination → Merit List → Training

The NDA written examination mainly includes:

  • Mathematics
  • General Ability Test

🎓 Where Will You Train?

Selected candidates undergo training at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, followed by further Air Force training.

After successful completion of the required training, eligible cadets are commissioned as Indian Air Force Officers.

2️⃣ CDS – Air Force Officer Route After Graduation

CDS means Combined Defence Services Examination. It is also conducted by UPSC.

For the Indian Air Force, CDSE is an important route to enter the Flying Branch.

✅ Basic Eligibility

  • Graduate / BE / B.Tech as prescribed.
  • Physics and Mathematics should have been studied at 10+2 level.
  • Final-year students may be eligible subject to notification conditions.
  • For CDSE Air Force Academy entry, the official IAF career information specifies male candidates.
  • Typical age range is around 20 to 24 years.

3️⃣ AFCAT – Major Air Force Officer Exam for Graduates

AFCAT stands for Air Force Common Admission Test.

This is one of the most important exams for graduates who want to become Group 'A' Officers in the Indian Air Force.

Through AFCAT You May Join

  • ✈️ Flying Branch
  • 🔧 Ground Duty Technical Branch
  • 📋 Ground Duty Non-Technical Branch

✅ Who Can Apply?

Educational qualification depends on the branch selected. Graduation, engineering or postgraduate qualifications may be required.

Both men and women can apply for eligible AFCAT entries.

For the Flying Branch, the age is generally around 20 to 24 years, while Ground Duty entries generally have a wider age range.

Always check the current AFCAT notification because branch-wise qualification, marks, age and vacancies may change.

4️⃣ Agniveervayu – Join the Air Force Under Agnipath Scheme

Agniveervayu is completely different from NDA, CDS and AFCAT Officer Entry.

⚠️ Important: Selection as Agniveervayu does not directly make you a commissioned Air Force Officer or Pilot.

⏳ Service Period

Agniveervayu personnel are initially enrolled for a period of four years.

💵 What Happens After Four Years?

Under recent official terms, Agniveervayu receive a one-time Seva Nidhi package after completing the four-year engagement.

The official table cited for a recent recruitment notice shows approximately ₹10.04 lakh excluding interest.

👨‍✈️ Will Everyone Get a Permanent Air Force Job?

No.

After completing four years, eligible Agniveervayu may get an opportunity to apply for enrolment into the regular cadre.

Based on organisational requirements, performance and other criteria, up to 25% of a particular batch may be enrolled in the regular cadre.

Therefore, students should not assume that every Agniveervayu candidate will automatically receive permanent service.
