How to Become an Indian Army Officer After Graduation Through UPSC CDS

Graduates who dream of serving as commissioned officers in the Indian Army can apply for the Combined Defence Services Examination, commonly called the UPSC CDS examination.

Candidates selected for the Army are trained at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun or the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, depending on their chosen entry.

💰 Training Stipend and Officer Salary

Cadets undergoing applicable training receive a fixed stipend of ₹56,100 per month, subject to the official conditions.

After commissioning, a Lieutenant starts in Pay Level 10: ₹56,100–₹1,77,500. Eligible officers may also receive Military Service Pay and other applicable allowances.

Social-media videos may mention annual packages such as ₹11.7 lakh. This should not be treated as a guaranteed fixed salary because the final amount varies according to allowances, posting, deductions and service conditions.
